SOUND

I work with sound to create gifts for people I care about. I use a variety of sound sources: instruments, voice, found recordings from old reel-to-reel tapes, or even the hiss of the radiators in my apartment. I then take and mix these field recordings in the studio.

My sound pieces are my exploration of possibilities. They are driven by my fears around social interaction: how to express and communicate how I really feel, wondering what others will think of me, because it puts me through the considering the risk of being rejected. I find myself holding back and being alone. In my work I attempt to challenge these problems by taking the risk and opening doors.

In many of my pieces, I start with one person in mind. Usually there is some unresolved tension or conflict between the person and me because of a lack of communication. In creating, I seek to resolve the current situation of the relationship. I think of the sound piece I make as a gift for that person. Often I will collaborate with those I love and care for. Working with friends is rewarding and I have found that it further enriches the final piece as a gift.

My artwork is viewed as personal, but in the final outcome I find that I have revealed to those who experience these same fears and vulnerabilities. What I express is deeply emotional and human. This touches and communicates to a much larger audience and I feel a reassurance that I am not alone.
